If you want to learn about food and wine pairing, there’s no better way to start your journey than to experience it first-hand, at the hand of a master. There are many different places across the Cape winelands where you can hone your skill and Van Loveren offers one of the most diverse opportunities around.

Early on, the family recognised wine’s inseparable link with food and good times, and the importance of demonstrating that link. So, in addition to its famous bistro, a range of tantalising food and wine tasting platters was launched.
Food and wine pairing
“By pairing food and wine, a host can certainly elevate a social gathering of friends or colleagues, but doing it the first time can be daunting,” says Bonita Malherbe, marketing manager at Van Loveren wines. “That’s why we put together the platters, to show how much fun and delicious it can be. They can be enjoyed as a tutored experience too.”
You might be on your own, with a group of friends or even have children with you – there’s something for everyone. On offer are eight selections: a wine and chocolate tasting; a nougat and nuts tasting, paired with wine; a master tasting that covers the extensive Van Loveren portfolio; a Four Cousins fan tasting; a wine and cheese tasting; a charcuterie tasting, pairing artisanal meats with wines; and even a non-alcoholic tasting. The non-alcoholic tasting is also available to children, with some extra fun activities thrown in.
“Visiting the farm and trying our tasting platters will really teach you how it’s done. You’ll be able to take what you’ve learnt and apply it at home,” says Bonita.
Something more substantial
If you’re keen for a little something more substantial, there’s the CHRISTINA’S @ VAN LOVEREN bistro, which specialises in thin-crust, wood-fired pizzas and gourmet burgers. Along with every meal you can enjoy a glass of your favourite Van Loveren wine under a shaded pergola. Other popular menu items include freshly squeezed juice, cappuccino, salads and sensational sweets. The bistro’s dish-of-the-day black board menu offers daily specials such as freshly made pasta and more.
All items on the menu are made from scratch, using local produce. The bistro is also open on Sundays, when local musicians set the tone for a laid-back afternoon. Plus, there’s free wifi for all Christina’s patrons.
Van Loveren is situated some 90 minutes from Cape Town and is an ideal weekend destination. The farm also has hiking and MTB trails and is a favourite with birders too.
One lucky reader of this article stands a chance to win a chocolate-and-wine pairing for herself and nine friends in her own home. Van Loveren will supply the wine, chocolates and instructions.
Terms and conditions apply. Competition expires on 22 May 2015
