Would you like to decorate your home but have no idea where to start? Here are some tips on planning and decorating your space with versatility, longevity and quality in mind without breaking the bank.
It is important to know and understand your own personal style. If you know exactly what you like you are already steps ahead. If not, put yourself on a spending freeze and devote some time getting to know yourself, your likes and dislikes. By bedding down your personal sense of style and keeping a running list of things you love, you can cut down on decorating mishaps, buyer’s remorse and wasted cash money.
But what if you cannot afford the coffee table you really want? Think two steps ahead and use a pair of less costly side tables instead. When you buy that coffee table later on the side tables can be used, as they were intended, or as bedside tables.
Recycling and upcycling is yet another way to decorate on a budget. Get to know your local vintage and antique shops; buying second-hand furniture is a great way to furnish your home when money is tight.
Decorating on a budget often results in people substituting with cheap imitations. Cheaply made stuff will fall apart; put aside money for a good quality item and save in the long run. Constantly buying and replacing shoddy furniture will end up being much more expensive. But do not be afraid to splurge on the few high-quality pieces you fancy; just make sure you do it smartly.
When you are short of cash do other inspirational things such as spending time creating mood boards from magazine cut-outs, clean up the clutter in that one room that always has the door closed or better still, learn a new skill and get creative.
Making things by hand is rewarding, fun and very addictive. With basic sewing skills you can easily make new cushions for your chairs and sofa or whip up new napkins and tablecloths. If sewing is not your thing try painting; there are many paint techniques that will breathe fresh life into an old piece of furniture.
Next time you open a magazine and wish you had a genie in a bottle that could grant you all the money in the world to make your dream home come true, think again. Interior decorating does not have to break the bank and you’ll have a lot of fun in the process.
