Who are you? What is your relation to the rest of the world? Who do you truly believe yourself to be? The denial of oneself can lead to the deepest unhappiness you will ever experience. How To Embrace Your Unique Identity?
“Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.” Oscar Wilde
There is a dilemma within contemporary society in which we have formed collective identities and neglected to acknowledge our own individual and unique inner identity. Let’s explore five bold solutions to developing or rediscovering your unique identity – creating a true self and an inconceivable happiness within:
1. Do not live up to the Joneses
Keeping up with the Joneses does not pave the road to true happiness – on the contrary it may leave you feeling empty and isolated from a more spiritual form of contentment. To compare your self-worth to the materialistic items you thoughtlessly consume will be detrimental to your unique identity and leave a void within you adding to your internal unhappiness and loss of identity. Why? Simply because all these material items do not define you!
2. Forget about stereotypes
We are often told what applies to our identities on the basis of our sex. You are expected to be a certain way, act in a particular manner and remain within the confinements that have been set out for you.
This can be a very frustrating aspect in your life as deep within you may have dreams and aspirations that clash with these prescribed stereotypes. The idea is to be exactly what you want to be and not to let society’s expectations weigh too heavily on you and what you choose to be. As Coco Chanel once said – “a girl should be two things: who and what she wants.”
3. Get to know – You
Claim your life journey by getting to know who you are. Spending time reflecting on you as an individual can be tremendously rewarding. It is a thought process in which you engage actively to come to terms with your true self and to be accepting thereof. This is not an instantaneous process but rather an ongoing development in which you can find great fulfilment and it will allow you to form great pride in what you find in yourself.
4. So it turns out you have flaws
Join the other 7 billion people in the world who all display an array of flaws. Human flaws are perhaps one of the aspects you truly share with the rest of the world; the Self need not be one of those aspects. It is just one more facet that makes you unique. It is a pointless exercise to regard this as a negative attribute when it is very possible to turn this to a positive-negative. If you carry the knowledge of your own flaws you can easily navigate your life to reach your full potential.
5. Embrace your voice
Not being able to speak your mind can often times feel like an enormous burden that reaches right within the soul of you. When you partake in the journey of self-discovery you will learn what you regard as important individualistic opinions. There will be situations in which you find the opportunity to speak your mind – do so and reap the benefits of demonstrating values and opinions you feel strongly about.
