1. Be Kind
It’s easy to blame yourself for not being able to solve a problem on your first try. Give yourself a break from self-criticism by making time to overcome challenges and setback. Being impatient and playing the blame game will only make them harder and longer to overcome.
Next time you are faced with a problem you just can’t fix, take a break by listening to a few of your favourite songs, doing some yoga or brewing yourself some hot tea. Giving yourself the time to fix it is often the remedy for the problem. So if you can, try and keep your busy schedule as simple as possible so that you can have the energy to tackle this new obstacle.
2. From the outside
Sometimes our brain will keep using the same path to solving a problem, which can keep leading us to a wall. When we’re too close or emotionally invested in a problem it’s hard to think clearly.
So when you’re faced with a new challenge, try and look at it from the perspective of an outsider. As an outsider with a knack for problem solving, you can analyse it and see what would be a good resolution. By taking a step back you’ll be able to see the problem in a new light and fresh way, which can lead you to the right answer.
3. Persistence is key
I’m sure we’re all familiar with the phrase: “If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again.” When dealing with new problems your first solution is often the one that doesn’t work. To overcome it you’ll need look at your problem again and try to understand why it didn’t work.
Then try several different solutions, moving from one to another, based on what results you get. Eventually you’ll find one that works, also having learnt from the process that you took to get there. When overcoming any obstacle, persistence will get you to the solution.
4. Look on the bright side
It’s easy to look on the bad side of every situation or problem. But this will only make it more difficult for you to get to the solution. This is why you need to look for the good in every difficult challenge that you face. If there’s only one good part or thing you can learn from it, focus on that. The better attitude you’ll have towards it, the easier it will be for you to deal with tough situations.
5. It’s inevitable
In life there are things that we don’t always want to do and challenges we don’t always want to face. But if we try to avoid or resist them, it only makes them persist. Then when you have to finally confront them, you no longer have the time to sift through different solutions.
