Basic White Sauce

Also known as Béchamel sauce, this basic white sauce is versatile and compliments almost any dish. Pair it with vegetables, turn it into a creamy casserole or ladle it over seafood or slices chicken. Serve “as is,” or make it into a cheese sauce. Spice it up with mustard, dill or curry for an unexpected bite.

  • Total Time 10 min
  • Servings 16


2 tablespoons butter or margarine

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 cups milk
  • In small saucepan, melt butter over low heat.
  • Stir in flour, salt and pepper.(Any additional ingredients should be added at this step)
  • Turn up the stove medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is smooth and bubbly and remove from heat.
  • Gradually stir in milk.
  • Return to a medium- high Heat until it starts  to boiling. Stirring constantly, allow the sauce to boil for 1 minute and remove from heat and it’s ready to serve.

And there you have it, a perfect white sauce in just a few minutes with very little effort and even better very little dishes. If you find your sauce is a bit lumpy when you boil it for the last time stir it with a whisk to break up the last few little lumps.
