Dark with dark, pale with pale
This is a “birds of a feather” kind of method of matching nail polish colours to your skin tone. If you have fairer skin, you should stick to lighter colours like pastels and soft shades. Darker colours such as black and blue can be too harsh on your skin tone. Unless you are going for the Goth look, in which case, do your thing!
Having a darker skin tone means that you are suited to most colours, but you should avoid pastels. They tend to wash out olive skin and can appear too harshly against deeper skin tones. However, this method does not leave much room to experiment. You can use it as a guideline rather than a rule. There are so many colours in between dark and light that would look gorgeous on you.
