It’s hard to deny the thrill of decorating. The promise of a new room, choosing paint samples, finding that perfect decoration to tie everything together. But all of the excitement aside designing and decorating your space can become a long and daunting project.
Between budget & time restrictions, endless decisions or not being able to find what you want. It’s really quite easy to lose a little steam and start feeling lost. Pinterest boards can only take you so far when you’re sitting on a old couch for 6 months while trying to save up for the perfect couch.
We’ve rounded up some of the best tips to help you spruce up your space like a designer.
1. Don’t compromise. Invest in furniture you love!
Take your time when furnishing your home. It will be worth the wait. While it might be tempting to buy it all at once and get it over and done with. Sometimes the right furniture is more important than a lot of furniture. Don’t buy for the sake of buying, or simply to fill a space, look at the size of your room and the size of the furniture that can fit in the room. Planning your space will help you utilize the area completely.
2. Determine your theme
Are you going for a modern, contemporary or casual look? Modern and contemporary furniture usually has sleek clean lines and makes use of white, beige and other neutral colours where as traditional furniture is elegant; it may be a bit formal with colours that range from ivory to hues of red and other colours.
It’s easy to get caught up in your favorite things and colours but when you establish your theme, stick with it and have it flow through the house. You don’t want to have a white modern lounge lead into a hot pink bathroom packed with everything under the sun.
3. Go with your gut
Your first feeling is usually right! When you’re standing in the shop staring at 10 different choices it’s easy to get lost and second guess yourself. But you will often find your first inspiration is always your best choice. Pinterest can be both a blessing and a curse. Use it as a resource to find what you are drawn to and for new ideas. But try not to put all your ideas into one room at once.
4. Bring the outside in
Plants and lighting add warmth and colour to a room and can really open it up and make it seem larger than it seems. A house filled with sunlight is cheery, warm and inviting. Plants give your room a fresh organic feel. Consider fresh herbs in the kitchen or even succulents on a coffee table.
5. If you can’t bring the sun light inside…. create your own
Lighting can make or break a room, no matter how well designed the room is. In all of the spaces we love, the chandelier or lamps are the eye candy of the room. Lighting add personality and impact to a room by creating the right atmosphere.
