Why You Need to Protect Your Eyes When Driving

Of our five senses, eyesight is one of the most important functions needed for safe driving. Our eyes are constantly active when receiving information and images that surround us on a daily basis and making sure that no strain is put on the eyes is imperative to ensure good and healthy eyesight. This is why you need to Protect Your Eyes When Driving

When we drive in the day, our eyes are exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Although it is unseen to the naked eye, this radiation is reflected onto our eyes and over exposure can cause serious damage to our eyes if not protected. Prevention of any UV related eye damage is possible by simply wearing good sunglasses that will give you the best protection for your eyes.

Over an extended period of time, our eyes will begin to lose perfect vision – even more so when they have been overexposed to UV radiation. Our eyes are extremely sensitive so protection is very important to help good eyesight.

This list below will give you a brief breakdown on the importance of eye protection and tips to ensure good clear vision needed for safe driving.

• Glare is an annoyingly uncomfortable excessive amount of bright light that is both distracting and dangerous causing a blinding effect on the driver. Glare can occur in the day from sunlight and at night from oncoming cars driving with bright lights on.

• Sun glare accidents occur in either the early morning or late afternoons, when the sun is positioned on the horizon, and the light shines directly into the drivers eyes. It is always at these times that you will most likely be in rush hour traffic in the morning or afternoon and the sun visor seem ineffective.

• A simple way to prevent sun glare accidents is to wear polarised sunglasses .Polarized sunglasses are available from any good optometrist or sunglass shop. The great thing about polarised sunglasses is that not only do they protect your eyes from sun glare, but they also protect your eyes from UV rays.

• Make sure that your windscreen is clean both inside and out all the time.

• Your car lights are vital when driving at night or in misty conditions so make sure that the headlight glass is clean. Also, ensure that the bulbs are working properly and that they can be adjusted for optimum lighting while not blinding other drivers.

• To avoid suffering the glare from oncoming traffic, try tilting your head or looking to the left to ease the discomfort.

• Do not limit your view by putting anything that might be a distraction to you. Keep your windscreen free of unnecessary stickers or objects.

• When you see glare coming, put down your visor and adjust if needed or put on your sunglasses.

• If you wear glasses or contact lenses, make sure they are always clean to ensure a good clear field of vision.

With this information, you will realise how important it is to look after your eyesight especially if you are a driver. So, look after your eyes because they will look out for you.
