So you go to the gym and unexpectedly bump into someone you know. You start to chat and before you know it an hour has past and you haven’t really done any exercise. It’s important that you don’t let socializing stop you in the middle of your workout since muscles won’t be warmed up anymore once you get on that treadmill again.
Start by limiting your socializing times to before and after your workouts so that it doesn’t prevent you from exercising. To help keep you focused put in some headphone and listen to your favourite music to get you motivated for your routine.
Skipping out on the warming up
After you’ve done all you’re social greetings, the first thing you should do before anything else is a warm-up. You may think that skipping it will save you on time, but that means you’ll probably get hurt and end up being stuck at home for a few weeks or months due to an injury.
Rather than risking it set aside 20 minutes for some dynamic stretches, such as squats, lunges, jumping jacks and push-ups. You can make the first set a lighter one that has more reps so that you can practice that specific movement and to get your blood flowing. If you feel that you don’t have enough time then rather cut out a set from each exercise instead of skipping it all together.
Not sticking to your workout plan
After finally deciding on a workout plan, you then go to the gym and do it for a couple of weeks. You become very efficient at doing them so you don’t think to change it. You then reach a point or plateau where you fail to see any change, which isn’t great if you want to increase strength, loss weight or improve your physical fitness.
This is why you should get yourself away from the routines and machines that you are already comfortable with. You can do this by changing your work outs every few weeks and months by altering the amount of reps, length of time, type of exercise and amount of time.
Not doing the proper technique
So it’s your first time going to gym in a while, you look around and see a couple of new machines. After reading the instructions you think you know how it works, you get on it only to pull a muscle. If you don’t know how to use a machine or perform an exercise properly then it can lead to serious injury and pains.
Learning the right way to use a machine and the proper form for lifting weights is essential if you want to get the best results. This could be challenging as you may not always know if you’re doing something wrong. If you’re not sure about how to use a specific machine get a gym employee to show you how it’s done or hire a personal trainer.
It’s not always easy to pick out where you’re going wrong, but if you keep a look out for these common mistakes then you’ll probably be able to avoid them and see some improvements in the long run.
