How old are you really ? A question that is being asked more and more frequently today. Although a  relatively difficult question to answer it is becoming more relevant in our fast paced world of today.  Due to the rapid  advancements in the medical fields, advanced nutrition and other invasive procedures, people are living to much older ages than say fifty years ago.

Although a person may be forty years in terms of his or her chronological age ie the number of years from the day that you were born,  “real age” or “biological age” may vary considerably depending on various factors such as Lifestyle, Diet, Nutrition, Stress, Habits, Genetics, Chronic diseases and obesity.

Your real age is the estimation of your age in terms of your biological status. How your cells are functioning at that point in time.

You may know a person that is sixty years old but still plays tennis and goes dancing etc .This person may be 60 yrs with regard to their chronological age but functionally they are like a 50 yr old. Their cells, if they had to be tested would certainly be younger than sixty years.

Basically the degeneration of their cells is slower due to certain factors, eg exercising, not smoking, active lifestyle etc.

Aging ultimately is the degeneration of  a cell over a period of time. Although this degeneration is inevitable certain factors can accelerate this degeneration whilst other factors can slow it down.

The opposite to the above is also true where one has accelerated degeneration of cells and therefore accelerated aging and unfortunately this has become more the norm in our society. People that are chronologically forty years old but their bodies function as if they are fifty due to bad lifestyle habits, no exercise etc.

The fact that people are living longer life spans does not mean that are living healthier lives, and this has been my concern over the last few years and why I have focused on making people younger and focusing on preventative medicine rather that curative medicine.

The biological age of a person is a much a better determination of the quality of life of a human being than chronological age, the most important factor being that one can reverse one’s biological age by altering lifestyle Habits etc.
This is really good news as one is able to make oneself younger by being pro active with regard to one’s health.

A person may then ask , well ,How do I know how old I really am?

There are approximately one hundred and fifty biomarkers of aging consisting of blood tests, physiological measurements, physical measurements and other tests to determines a persons biological age.

One does not need to do all these tests to determine  a person’s real age as there are few tests that can give you a good indication of what you age is.

One should not be dogmatic about these tests but tests done over a period of time can give you a good indication of where you are going in terms of your health or age.
A new system in South Africa called the H-Scan  measures certain physiological functions of one’s body and mind .All the data is captured by a computer system and analysed to give you a good indication of the functional age of your body. It is a non-invasive and painless investigation that requires approximately forty minutes.

Once the results have been interpreted and one’s weaknesses and strengths have been identified, a person is able to make a pro active choice in developing a health programme to a healthier younger  you.

Not only will you look younger but feel it too. Some people have decreased their functional age by as much as ten to fifteen years by simply altering certain lifestyle habits, taking preventative nutritional supplements and minimizing their risk in terms of managing certain disease risks.

Ultimately one would like to add years to one’s life and life to one’s years.
Look forward to being younger and growing old gracefully.
