Women often hear that it’s fine for them to give up their careers in order to become stay at home mothers. It’s the best thing for the kids and they can easily continue with their careers when their kids are older.
Now a new book – called The Feminine Mistake: Are we giving up too much (available in our bookshop) disagrees with all that. The author, Leslie Bennetts, says that women should not quit their careers when they have children, because if women depend on their spouses, it would have serious consequences, often of an economic nature.
The husband can get disabled, die, or lose his job. And with the high rate of divorce there is more than a 50% chance of her becoming single again.
In today’s world it is often difficult for a woman to return to her career after a long absence. The book highlights factors such as ageism, sexism and possible resentment in the workplace.
Compared to someone who didn’t leave her career, taking three or four years absence from work could mean earning up to one-third less income.

Just because you’re a great career woman doesn’t mean you can’t be a great mom.
